An outdoor motion sensor LED floodlight doesn’t just provide when and where you need it. It acts as a deterrent against burglars or other intruders. Installing a motion-activated light is as simple as replacing any wall-mounted fixture. All you need are some basic supplies and one to two hours. Here’s what you’ll need for this intermediate-level project
TOOLS & MATERIALS
- Flathead Screwdriver
- Phillips Screwdriver
- Drill/Driver with Bits
- Wire Stripper
- Ladder
- LED Floodlights
When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear.
STEP ONE
Turn off the power. Locate the circuit breaker for your existing outdoor fixture and shut off the power. Confirm the switch controlling the fixture is in the off position.
STEP TWO
Remove the bulbs from the old fixture. Remove the light bulbs from your current fixture before beginning as they can get in the way or shatter while you work.
STEP THREE
Detach the old fixture. Locate the screws connecting the fixture to your house and back them out with a drill driver. Unscrew the wire nuts and remove the fixture. If there’s a mounting bracket, remove that as well.
STEP FOUR
Install the mounting bracket. Position your new fixture’s mounting bracket in place and install with screws. Some brackets require a central mounting screw. Others have holes for a cover plate that attaches with two screws.
STEP FIVE
Install quick connect. If your new fixture has a quick connect, unscrew the floodlight from the connection. Then, attach it to the mounting bracket. Carefully follow the manufacturer instructions to continue wiring the fixture. If your fixture doesn’t require a quick connect, join the wires by twisting them together with a wire nut.
STEP SIX
Attach the fixture. Align the fixture to the quick connect, making sure it’s properly centered. Secure it with the screws provided and cover with a cap or plug for a finished look.
STEP SEVEN
Adjust the fixture. Adjust the lights and motion sensor as needed. Aim the sensor, making sure it’s tilted at least five degrees to allow rain and other moisture to drain off. Check manufacturer instructions for your light’s specific settings.
STEP EIGHT
Restore power. Turn the breaker back on, then turn on the switch that controls the fixture.
STEP NINE
Set the sensor. Test to make sure the light works, and follow manufacturer instructions to adjust your sensor’s settings.
STEP TEN
Try it at dusk. After sunset, walk into the area covered by the sensor and confirm the fixture is working correctly.
