TOM: By blocking sunlight, canvas awnings can save homeowners up to 15 percent on summer cooling costs and, if they’re well-maintained, their classic look can add nicely to your home’s retail value.
LESLIE: If you get on board with the savings but not the lack of sunlight in your home, buy motorized high-tech awnings that will extend and retract when you want them to.
TOM: These can be set to timers or built-in sensors that can be programmed to respond to certain weather conditions, like, say, always opening when it rains.
LESLIE: And for maximum energy savings, go with light-colored awnings that won’t absorb as much heat as the darker shades. I’m Leslie Segrete.
