A wooden wine rack is a great way to store wine while artfully displaying your favorite bottles. Building one is a great beginner’s level project that’s quick and inexpensive. The wine rack featured in this project can be customized by increasing its size or stacking multiple units on top of one another. You’ll only need a few basic tools and supplies to take on this task.
TOOLS & MATERIALS
- Miter Saw/Circ Saw
- 1” x 6” x 4’ Pine
- ½” x 36” Oak Dowel
- Drill Press/Power Drill
- 80, 150, & 220 Sandpaper
- 3.5” Hole Saw
- ½” Forstner Bit
- Danish Oil
- Wood Glue
When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear.
STEP ONE
Cutting your wood to size. Start by cutting your wood to size. With your miter saw, cut the 1×6 into two 21 ½ inch pieces, and the dowel into four 5 ½ inch pieces. If you’d like to build a stackable wine rack, cut the dowel into four 1 ½ inch pieces.
STEP TWO
Cut wine bottle holes. Measure and mark ¾ inches from one side and add five inches for each additional wine bottle hole, marking the middle of the board for each hole. Then using a drill or a drill press, cut holes into the wood using your hole saw.
STEP THREE
Drill dowel holes. Mark ¾ of an inch from each end of the wood and half inch from the top and bottom. Place a piece of tape on your Forstner bit to indicate how deep you’ll be drilling, so you don’t drill through the wood. Drill your dowel holes, inserting each dowel into a hole with wood glue on each side. If you’re building stackable units, be sure to drill additional dowel holes, centered and 1 ½ inches from each side on the bottom of your second unit.
STEP FOUR
Sand. Allow the wood glue to set. Then sand the entire wine rack using 80 grit sandpaper to smooth joints and imperfections. Continue sanding, progressing from 150 to 220 grit sandpaper, until the wood is completely smooth. Wipe clean after sanding with tack cloth or a rag.
STEP FIVE
Finishing. You’re build is complete! Generously apply Danish oil to the wood with a rag. Once completely dry, insert wine bottles, step back, and admire your new wine rack.
