I live in West Central Illinois and we are currently in drought conditions. Is there anything that should be done to protect our home's foundation? We have a full basement. I had been told to water the foundation but wanted to verify that this is a good idea. Thank you.
Our Answer
In certain areas with expansive clay soils, the ground can shrink and dry out and periods of drought which can lead foundation damage. This is prevalent for example in western Texas where it is not unusual to maintain a foundation watering system. I'm not aware that these conditions occur in center Illinois – nor do I have personal knowledge of foundation damage resulted from such a scenerio.
