TOM: No matter how great a housekeeper you are, the dreaded cockroach can become an uninvited guest. Here’s what you need to do. Hi. I’m Tom Kraeutler.
LESLIE: And I’m Leslie Segrete with today’s Money Pit Home Improvement Minute.
TOM: Like other disease-carrying insects, roaches are a health threat. They cause allergies, asthma, and transmit dangerous bacteria. And if you see just one roach in your home, you can bet others are close behind.
LESLIE: A few quick maintenance projects can shut cockroaches out and keep your home healthy. For example, caulk around your doors and windows to seal holes and gaps. A young roach can get through a space the thickness of a dime.
TOM: Prune shrubs and trees and eliminate sources of water by sealing pipes and fixing leaky appliances. A roach can survive up to a month without food but it can only live for seven days without water.
LESLIE: Also, treat attics, garages, and basements with insecticides or baits and you’ll avoid the hassle and health dangers of these uninvited guests. I’m Leslie Segrete.
