TOM: Drafty windows are more than just a nuisance. They may be the biggest reason you’re paying too much to heat your home. Hi, I’m Tom Kraeutler.
LESLIE: And I’m Leslie Segrete with today’s Money Pit Home Improvement Minute.
TOM: The U.S. Department of Energy reports the typical home loses more than 25 percent of its heat through windows.
LESLIE: Easy window-sealing techniques can help. Caulk around window frames inside and out and if you live in a rental, use removable weather-stripping caulk to seal windows on the inside. It comes off easily afterward.
TOM: Heavy drapes or insulated window shades also stop drafts in their tracks. Just open the drapes during the day to let warm sunshine return.
LESLIE: And while their price tag might initially stop you cold, new energy star-rated windows are worth the investment. They’ll keep warm air in and heating bills down for years to come. I’m Leslie Segrete.
