TOM: Wood-burning fireplaces might be charming, but a fireplace insert is a better way to heat your home and won’t steal heat from your living space. Hi, I’m Tom Kraeutler.

TOM: A fireplace insert is basically a fireproof box with an insulated glass front, which creates a more efficient closed-combustion system within your existing fireplace. Inserts can also draw combustion air from outside, meaning the expensive heated air inside your home isn’t sent up the chimney.
LESLIE: Now some inserts have blowers that push the heat through vents and into your living space, making them a great supplemental heat source.
TOM: Gas and electric inserts are the most efficient, but a wood-burning insert still provides better heat than a traditional fireplace and maintains that good old-fashioned view of logs on the fire. I’m Tom Kraeutler.
