Common in kitchens, laundry rooms, and bathrooms, two-handle cartridge faucets are easy to repair. If yours is leaking, you can fix it on your own with a few basic supplies.
To make your repair, here’s what you’ll need.
TOOLS
-
- Allen wrenches
- Tongue and groove pliers
MATERIALS
- Replacement cartridges
Note that the most reliable way to get the correct parts for your faucet is by knowing the brand name and model number.
When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear. Throughout the video, we’ll alert you regarding when you should and should not use the safety gear.
STEP ONE
Turn off the water. Before beginning your project, turn off the water supply under your sink.
STEP TWO
Remove handle. To prevent any parts from falling down your drain, place a rag or cloth in the sink over the drain opening. After you’ve done this, loosen and remove your old faucet’s handles. Depending on the type of faucet you’ll be installing, you’ll do this with either a screwdriver or an Allen wrench.
STEP THREE
Remove ring. Remove your old faucet’s threaded retaining ring with tongue and groove pliers. Then remove any retaining clips that may be holding the cartridge in place.
STEP FOUR
Remove cartridge. Grip the top of the cartridge with your pliers and pull straight up to remove it. With its tab facing forward, install the replacement cartridge. Then reattach the retaining ring and handle. Turn the water supply back on and slowly turn on the faucet.
Your repair is complete!
