LESLIE: Now we’re going to take a call from Shirley in Missouri who’s got some mold on the vinyl siding.
Shirley, how much is there?
SHIRLEY: Oh, it’s from the top to the bottom and it’s just in spots. The house looks like it’s got measles.
TOM: If it looks like it’s got measles, Shirley, did you recently put any mulch around your house?
SHIRLEY: No. This siding’s been on – this vinyl siding’s been on my house for five years; be five years in September.
TOM: OK.
SHIRLEY: And it never did do that before.
TOM: Because it sounds to me – if it looks like spots …
SHIRLEY: Yes.
TOM: … there’s something out there, in terms of fungus, that grows on vinyl siding; it’s called artillery fungus because it looks like bullets hit your house.
SHIRLEY: Mm-hmm.
TOM: And it’s a really tough one to get rid of. You need to treat that siding very carefully with a mildicide. You’re going to have to use a mildicide on it and you’re going to have to pressure wash it. But if you pressure wash it, you can’t use too much power or you’ll cut through the siding. But the way to do it is to apply a mildicide to that fungus, let it sit for a good ten minutes or so, and then rinse it off and that will get it under control.
SHIRLEY: Now where do I get this at?
TOM: A mildicide? Well, you can buy them at different stores. One that works pretty well is called Jomax – J-o-m-a-x – and that’s available at home centers.
Alright, thanks so much for calling us at 1-888-MONEY-PIT.
