TOM: In the market for a new floor and want to make an ecofriendly choice? There’s never been more options and materials that are good for you and the planet. Hi, I’m Tom Kraeutler.
LESLIE: And I’m Leslie Segrete with today’s Money Pit Home Improvement Minute. There are several things that make flooring green. For example, whether or not the material is sustainable or renewable, whether toxic chemicals were involved in the manufacturing process, and how far the flooring has to travel.
TOM: Bamboo is an extremely sustainable resource because it grows quickly. Cork is good because the material comes from tree bark without sacrificing the whole tree. Linoleum is made the same way it was over a century ago, from linseed oil, cork dust, wood flour, tree resins, ground limestone and pigments, pressed onto a jute backing.
LESLIE: And durability also counts. If it needs to be replaced every few years, it’s not very green. I’m Leslie Segrete.
