TOM: Careless moving companies can bust your budget as well as your belongings, so do your homework before you hire. Start by making sure the mover is licensed, insured, and registered with your state’s Department of Transportation.
LESLIE: Collect competitive estimates from at least three moving companies and make sure that they’re based on in-person assessments of your current space and belongings.
TOM: Also, know the difference between a binding and nonbinding estimate. Nonbinding is based on an estimated hourly rate or weight of cargo while a binding estimate is based on the thorough review of your home’s contents with the mover financially responsible for estimate accuracy.
LESLIE: From there, make sure you understand any fine print, check mover references thoroughly, and confirm that the moving crew is covered by the company’s insurance. I’m Leslie Segrete.
