We would like to cover our old redwood deck with a non-maintenance covering like tile or cement. What products do you suggest, and how do we get information on that type of covering?
Our Answer
I'm glad you reached out before tackling this job, because tile and cement don't make good deck coverings. Your deck doesn't provide a sufficient base, and this could have become quite dangerous.
Here's an alternative: Remove the worn decking but keep the deck's framing (assuming it's in good structural condition). Replace those planks with composite decking. So you're essentially keeping the wood substructure, but the rest of the deck is now composite. The result is a deck that's virtually maintenance-free. Good luck!
