LESLIE: Now we’re going to North Carolina where Ken has a concrete question.
Ken, how can we help?
KEN: Oh, thanks for taking my call.
LESLIE: You’re so welcome. What can we do for you?
KEN: I just built a new garage and I’ve got a concrete floor in it and I’m wondering what kind of sealer I should put on this. I would like to get a finish on the floor like something you’d expect to see in a NASCAR garage or something.
TOM: A NASCAR garage, huh?
KEN: Yeah.
TOM: They are pretty garages, aren’t they? I’ve been in those garages and they are absolutely perfect. They’re cleaner than my house, those garages. (Leslie chuckles)
There’s a lot of different finishes available for garage floors. One that I’ve used on my own floor is called EPOXYShield. It’s made by Rust-Oleum and it comes in a gallon container that’s short-filled, actually has 3/4-gallon of product, then you add another quart of hardener and it brings it up to the full gallon. And when you put that stuff down, there’s actually a chip that can go into it that gives you sort of a decorative finish. That’s one option.
Leslie, any ideas?
LESLIE: Well, if you’re thinking about putting something on top of it, they also have these rubber mats that sort of interlock and interconnect almost like puzzle pieces. And they come in black or in like bright colors if you wanted to use it for like a kid’s play area. And you can lay that down on top of the concrete itself which gives you a nice area to work on and also a nice area to put your car on top of.
KEN: Alright, I do appreciate it.
TOM: Alright, terrific. Thanks so much for calling us at 1-888-MONEY-PIT, 888-666-3974.
Lots of options in garage floors today; more than we ever had before. There are more ways to refinish a floor than simply add a coat of paint. You have the epoxy paints, you have the rubber mats, or the interlocking tiles; all great, attractive ways to make your garage just look fantastic.
