LESLIE: Now we’re going to take a call from our friends up north in Ontario, Canada.
Ronald, how can we help you?
RONALD: I’ve got a problem at home. Every time I do laundry down in the basement, the water comes up through the pipes and onto my sink upstairs.
TOM: Oh, it backs up.
RONALD: Whenever I do my dishes upstairs, whenever I pull the plug, water has a hard time going back down.
TOM: Yeah.
RONALD: And I check on top of the roof. I put the water hose in there. I check the drain in the basement, where all the pipes connect, and it’s all clear.
TOM: There’s got to be an obstruction somewhere. Because what’s happening is you’re filling up the waste line with water and it can only fill up so much and then it starts to back up. And everything that you’re telling me says that that pipe is blocked somewhere. Have you had the drains snaked? Have you had a snake run out through the drains all the way to the point where they connect to the street or to your septic field?
RONALD: No, not yet. No.
TOM: Because I bet you’re going to find that somewhere between the house and the drain – are you on city sewers?
RONALD: Yeah.
TOM: Yeah, I think you’re going to find that somewhere between the house and the drain there’s an obstruction. And as that water fills up, that pipe fills up, it’s just going to back up and it’s usually going to leak out the first place it can.
RONALD: OK.
TOM: So you clearly have an obstruction and that’s why everything is acting the way that it is.
RONALD: Alright, thank you sir.
TOM: You’re welcome. Thanks so much for calling us at 1-888-MONEY-PIT, 888-666-3974.
