LESLIE: Coming up we have Michella in Iowa who has unwanted Asian beetles in her house and wants to get rid of them. How many have you seen?
MICHELLA: I have seen thousands.
TOM: And they smell, too, don’t they?
MICHELLA: Yes, they do. You don’t smash them. You put them in water and drown them.
LESLIE: Really?
TOM: Yeah, because they’re really stinky when they build up like that. They’ve been a real problem this year. We’ve gotten more and more calls on the Asian beetles. What you need to do is use a microencapsulated pesticide. One that you could use is called Demand or Demon WP. It’s one that you spray on. You use like one of the Ortho sprayers and you spray it on the baseboards, the windowsills, the doorsills and other areas where the beetles can get in. And that’s going to stay around for a while. If you hit them directly, it’ll kill them; but more importantly, it stays around for a while and deters them from coming into the house. It’s really a population control situation where you have to have the right kind of pesticide applied at the right place to keep them from coming back in.
MICHELLA: OK.
LESLIE: Oh, that just sounds terrible.
MICHELLA: It is and I don’t understand. I mean we started getting them in February and we live in Iowa and it’s cold here.
LESLIE: They live in the heat in your walls and as you have the heat on in your house, the warmth sort of circulates them and gets them going.
TOM: Yeah, that’s where they want to get. They want to be warm just like you, so that’s why they come in in the cold weather.
LESLIE: (overlapping voices) Ew.
TOM: Alright, well you go after them, OK Michella?
MICHELLA: I will do that. Thank you very much.
TOM: You’re very welcome. Thanks so much for calling us at 1-888-MONEY-PIT.
