LESLIE: Now we’re going to take a call from Bob in New Jersey who’s got some questions about radiant heat, which is a good option to keep your tootsies warm in the winter.
Bob, how can we help?
BOB: Yes, I’m going to be remodeling my basement with some hardwood flooring. It’s on a slab now. Can I put radiant heat down before I put the new floor on?
TOM: Yes you can. There are radiant heat panels that are available that can fit right over the hardwood floor slab. You have to frame it up. And we interviewed – Leslie, do you remember when we talked to Kevin Ireton, the editor of Fine Homebuilding magazine? He had a …
LESLIE: Your Phi Beta Kappa carpenter friend? (chuckles)
TOM: That’s right, our Phi Beta Kappa carpenter. The only guy we know who’s a carpenter who graduated Phi Beta Kappa. (chuckles) He actually – there’s a story on FineHomebuilding.com about how to floor over a concrete floor in a basement. And it was a really good story about how to actually position the insulation panels and right above those, I think you can install the radiant heat. So it is an option for a basement floor. It’s probably going to be a fairly costly option to do it that way, Bob, but it definitely is possible to do.
BOB: Well, thank you so much.
TOM: You’re very welcome. Thanks so much for calling us at 1-888-MONEY-PIT.
