TOM: Hanging photos and artwork can be tricky, but a few simple tricks of the trade can help. Hi, I’m Tom Kraeutler.

TOM: First, mark the spot where the picture will go, then choose between expansion anchors, which work best in thick solid walls, and hollow wall anchors, which are designed for thin or hollow material.
LESLIE: If it’s drywall you’re working with, use a plastic anchor. And if the picture weighs more than 20 pounds, double-check the anchor’s weight limit to make sure it’s not exceeded.
TOM: Plaster walls crack easily, so go with metal toggle bolts which expand to add extra support from behind. And for heavier items hung on plaster, be sure to connect directly to a wall stud.
LESLIE: For brick and stone walls use a masonry bit to drill into the mortar joints between them, not on the brick or stone itself. Drive the anchor into the hole, then secure the hanging with molly bolts, which typically can hold up to 50 pounds. I’m Leslie Segrete.
