TOM: A blanket of snow on your roof may look pretty, but it could be hiding a leak waiting to happen. Hi, I’m Tom Kraeutler.

TOM: If your roof starts leaking when snow begins to melt you might have an ice dam. These happen when ice builds up along roof edges and the melting snow underneath has nowhere to go but inside your home.
LESLIE: One way to prevent this expensive winter damage is by keeping your gutters clean and clear so that the melting ice and snow can flow away from your roof.
TOM: Attic insulation and ventilation are also key as they reduce the temperature difference between your home’s interior and the roof’s exterior.
LESLIE: Also, make sure that protection is built into your roof. A few layers of ice and water shield on your roofing material will stop damaging costly leaks. I’m Leslie Segrete.
