A front door knocker is an elegant addition to any home that’s both decorative and functional. Installing a door knocker is inexpensive, quick, and great for those new to DIYing. Here’s what you’ll need for this project:
TOOLS & MATERIALS
-
- Tape Measure
- Straight Edge/Ruler
- Drill
- Drill Bit
- Screwdriver
- Pencil
- Door Knocker Kit
When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear.
STEP ONE
Prepare and position knocker. Hold the knocker up to your door and determine where you’d like it to be located. Mark the spot with a pencil. Between eye and shoulder level is best. Measure the width of your door from the mark you just made, then divide your door’s width in half to find the center point. Make sure it’s centered horizontally and adjust as necessary.
STEP TWO
Transfer measurements. Measure the distance between the holes on the back of the door knocker. Using the first mark as a reference, transfer this measurement to your door. Measure horizontally at the second mark to make sure it’s properly centered.
STEP THREE
Drill pilot holes. Using a small drill bit, drill two holes at your marks. While we recommend that your holes should not be more than half an inch each, it’s a good idea to double check manufacturer’s instructions for recommendations.
STEP FOUR
Attach the door knocker. Insert the screws provided with your door knocker kit from the interior side of the door. Place the door knocker against the exterior of the door, and fasten the screws until it’s secure.
Your installation is complete!
