Our house was built in the 1950s and I was wondering your input on insulating the rafter area upstairs. If we do this would we need more vents on the roof and a fan on each end of the peak of the roof. Thank You

If your attic is unfinished, it’s never a good idea to insulate the rafters. First, the insulation belongs between the conditioned space (that’s the heated living space) and the unconditioned space, which is your attic. So the insulation should go on your attic floor. Secondly, when you insulate your attic rafters, essentially you’re causing the sun to “cook” your roofing material, shortening its life.
After insulating the attic floor, you’ll need to install ridge and soffit vents.
