How do you fix a leaking window air conditioner? Our wonderful old house was built in 1933 and we are trying to restore it to its original beauty. The house is two stories and has some issues, including the air conditioning system. The first floor has central air conditioning but the second floor has window air conditioner units which leak down the side of the house. Can I install drain lines on these units to run to the flower beds instead of the water running down the side of the house?
Our Answer
Correcting a leaking window air conditioner can be challenging, so while you could cobble together a solution for catching the dripping water (like using a small funnel attached to the bottom of the A/C unit and a rubber hose), it will most likely be sloppy and somewhat ineffective.
A better solution for dealing with dripping air conditioners involves replacing them with new A/C units equipped with what are known as sling fan blades. Sling blades do exactly that with the condensation: they sling it onto the evaporator coil where it is blown dry. Hence, no more dripping air conditioners!
