LESLIE: We’ve got Robert in North Dakota who’s doing a flooring project. What can we do for you?
ROBERT: Hi, I’ve just got a question. I’ve got a dining room floor that seems to be uneven underneath the linoleum. And I want to do like ceramic tile over the top of that floor after I clear the linoleum off. What can I do to level up that floor?
LESLIE: How big of a slope are we talking?
ROBERT: Well, I can just feel the waves throughout the dining room; from walking, you can feel the unevenness.
TOM: Well, have you considered putting down a mud concrete floor; a mud floor under – on top of the linoleum before you set the tile?
ROBERT: Uh-uh, I hadn’t thought about that one.
TOM: You could do it that way or you could simply pull up the linoleum and put it down that way. If it’s that uneven, that might be the only thing that you have to do. Because if you put it down – the linoleum tile – over an uneven surface like that, it could crack.
LESLIE: If you’re dealing with just the floor sloping and you’re not dealing with unevenness as far as, you know, hills and valleys and bumps and areas like that, then that’s fine; as long as it’s a uniform base. If it’s a slope, that’s OK. But like Tom said, if you’re dealing with sort of jagged, steppy edges, then you’re definitely going to want to make sure you get a nice, smooth, level foundation.
TOM: Robert, thanks so much for calling us at 888-MONEY-PIT.
