Garages are infamous for clutter. Keep your garage organized with sturdy garage shelving. This tutorial will walk you through how to build and install shelving with four shelves, each one of them five feet wide, but feel free to make yours as wide or tall as you’d like. Just remember to secure your garage shelving to a wall with the appropriated rated anchors to prevent tipping. Here’s what you’ll need to build easy garage shelves:
TOOLS & MATERIALS
- Impact Driver
- Circular or Miter Saw
- Table Saw
- Tape Measure
- Speed Square

- Pencil
- Stud Finder
- Level
- Four 2”x4”x7′ Boards
- Six 2”x4”x57” Boards
- Six 2”x4”x17” Boards
- Three 2”x4”x21” Boards
- Three ¾”x24”x57” Plywood
- 2 ½” Self-tapping Wood Screws
- 4 ¾” Construction Screws
When taking on this DIY task, be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear before building your garage shelves.
STEP ONE
Build side supports. Measure, mark, and cut your 2x4s using a circular or miter saw. Adjust the sizing as need to fit your garage space. Lay out two seven-foot boards side by side on a flat surface, and mark the location for your three shelves. Place a 17-inch board at each mark between the other two boards. Fasten the middle pieces to the sides, with construction screws on both sides. Then repeat for the other side support.
STEP TWO
Connect side supports. Place side supports as shown. Fasten two 57-inch outer boards at each shelf location, flush against the leg boards, using self-tapping screws on both sides.
STEP THREE
Add shelf supports. Measure and mark 30 inches in on each 2×4. Then, using self-tapping screws, fasten a 21-inch board at each location.
STEP FOUR
Add shelves. Your garage shelves will be 24×57 inches. Measure and mark your plywood. Then make your cuts with a table saw. Lay each shelf flat across the supports, and fasten with self-tapping screws.
STEP FIVE
Finishing. Paint or stain your new shelving according to manufacturer’s instructions. Once dry, check to make sure your shelves are level, shimming the bottom if needed. Secure to the wall, through back-shelf supports, with the appropriately rated screws. If you’re not able to fasten directly to a stud, use drywall anchors. Your build and installation are complete. Step back and admire your new garage shelving.
