TOM: Summer is the riskiest time of year for pool drownings, a leading cause of death among children. To prevent tragedy and provide peace of mind, add several layers of safeguards to your pool area.
LESLIE: Pool fences are the most effective deterrent against drowning. They must be at least four feet high, have horizontal supports mounted to face the pool, and a self-closing gate with a high childproof latch.
TOM: Pool covers are the next layer of protection. The best choice is a self-draining mesh cover stretched taut across the pool and able to support the weight of a child plus several rescuers.
LESLIE: Also, make alarms part of your pool safety plan. Alarms can be installed on exterior home doors leading to that pool area on your fence and gates, and in the pool itself. I’m Leslie Segrete.
