LESLIE: Now we’re going to take a call from David in Nebraska who’s battling some carpenter ants.
David, what’s going on?
DAVID: Oh, I have carpenter ants in my kitchen.
LESLIE: And you know this by the little tool belts?
DAVID: Yeah, absolutely. They’ve got little hammers, too. (Tom and Leslie chuckle) No, they’re black; they’re about 1/4-inch long or so – some are a little bigger. But from what I could find on the internet, they seem to be carpenter ants.
TOM: OK.
DAVID: They’ll come in; usually I see them around the sink, is about the only place, and then I’ll try to see where they go. They go underneath the counter and they disappeared after that. I couldn’t find where they’re going to.
TOM: Yeah. Well, eventually – they live outside somewhere and they’re just coming in for a little sip of water and a little bite of food and they’re probably going back to their nest.
The best way to treat for them is with a product called Termidor – T-e-r-m-i-d-o-r. Termidor can be put on the outside of your house and the ants don’t know it’s there and they will crawl through it on their way in and out of your house. But they get it on their bodies and they take it back to their nest and they pass it to all the other ants in the nest and it eliminates the whole colony.
DAVID: OK.
TOM: So that’s the way to do it. If you want more information, you can go to TermidorHome.com. They have a tool there where you can put in your zip code and find a pest management professional in your neighborhood that knows how to use it.
DAVID: One more quick question.
TOM: Sure.
DAVID: Could they be living in railroad ties? Because we have some old railroad ties that are used for, oh, like a border outside our house.
TOM: Absolutely, they could be living in old, rotted wood or in the soil itself. But in either event, if you have a pest management pro put down Termidor, it will eliminate the problem because they take it back to the nest. So it’s not just a barrier; you’re actually going to have them take it back to the nest and pass it to all their little ant friends and that’s going to take care of them once and for all.
DAVID: Alright, wonderful.
TOM: OK, David?
DAVID: Thank you very much.
TOM: You’re very welcome. Thanks again for calling us at 888-MONEY-PIT, 888-666-3974.
