My hip roof has a short ridge vent due to the hip design. My soffit vents are adequately open. Will I get enough natural ventilation without a powered roof ventilator fan?
Our Answer
A properly ventilated attic is a great way to make your home more energy effiicient. Nine times out of 10, we recommend continuous ridge and soffit vents. This is especially true when you have continuous vents with a nice long line. If you have a shorter roof run, an attic fan can help. Make sure you set the fan to kick on at 100 degrees. It's also very important to make sure the soffit vents are unblocked at all times. Any blockage can depressurize the attic and will subsequently cause the attic fan to draw conditioned air from the inside of your house. This is one of the main reasons we do not usually recommend an attic fan. But a hip roof is a scenario where an attic fan could help.
