LESLIE: Next up on The Money Pit is Shane in Texas who seems to have a wet situation on a floor.
What happened?
SHANE: What happened was my wife was steam-cleaning the couch and she left the water standing on the floor right there. And it’s right in the seams of where it comes together.
TOM: So it got swollen?
SHANE: Yeah, it swelled up.
TOM: Well, that’s very unusual because let me tell you about laminate floor. I have done experiments with laminate floor, pieces where we’ve left them soaking overnight in water, and it has absolutely no effect on the flooring. So I’m wondering what kind of material this is. It doesn’t really sound like true laminate floor.
LESLIE: Yeah, but maybe it was the actual heating element on the steam cleaner itself.
TOM: Well, that’s true. I didn’t use heat in my experiment. Whatever the case, if the floor is swollen, it’s not going to be able to be put back where it us. You have to replace that piece.
SHANE: OK. Now you think they would warranty that?
TOM: Not against a steam cleaner, no.
SHANE: Oh, OK.
TOM: No, I mean they’re going to – normal wear and tear, yes, but not after – you know, they’re not going to warranty it to prevent that kind of abuse. That’s not going to happen. But it is possible to replace it, by the way. What you’re going to have to do is cut out the old piece and get in a new one.
SHANE: OK.
TOM: Alright, Shane?
SHANE: OK, guys. Thanks.
TOM: You’re welcome. Thanks so much for calling us at 888-MONEY-PIT.
