TOM: Does noise outside your home sound like it’s breaking the sound barrier? Put a stop to it with a barrier of your own, trees. Hi, I’m Tom Kraeutler.

LESLIE: And I’m Leslie Segrete with today’s Money Pit Home Improvement Minute.

TOM: Trees not only block sound from reaching your home. They counter it with natural noise like birds chirping and leaves rustling.

LESLIE: Trees work best as barriers when they’re planted close to the noise source itself. If a line of trees at the edge of your property isn’t an option, consider multiple rows of shrubs instead.

TOM: And unlike fences that face height restrictions, trees can grow tall for added noise insulation. One point five fewer decibels for every three feet of height. But keep this in mind. Once a tree hits 40 feet – it actually lets in more noise.

LESLIE: Now deciduous trees with larger leaves reduce more noise in spring and summer but evergreens provide more year round protection. I’m Leslie Segrete.
