LESLIE: Now we’re going to take a call from Marjorie in Indiana who has some flooring questions.
Marjorie, what can we do for you?
MARJORIE: We’re getting ready to lay some Bellawood flooring and it’s 1/2-inch thick.
TOM: OK.
MARJORIE: We’re putting it on a subflooring which is – it’s an older house; the flooring is fairly old. Should we put some kind of underlayment or some kind of padding underneath that or should it go directly on the floor?
TOM: It probably can go right on the floor. This is real hardwood flooring, right?
MARJORIE: Yes.
TOM: This is prefinished hardwood flooring?
MARJORIE: Right.
TOM: It probably can go right down on the floor but I will tell you that, typically, what a carpenter will do is put something down called rosin paper in between the floor just to give you a clean surface to work on. It looks like tar paper but it’s red. And it’s very inexpensive and it just gives you a clean surface to work with and it’s not a bad …
LESLIE: And you usually can find it in the paint aisle of your home improvement store.
TOM: Yeah, exactly. So go ahead and put the paper down and then put the prefinished floor right on top of that.
MARJORIE: It sort of looks like it might be fun. (Leslie chuckles)
TOM: Yeah, it definitely will. It’s like putting a puzzle together.
MARJORIE: That’s right; a big one.
TOM: Alright, well you have fun with it. Marjorie, thanks so much for calling us at 888-MONEY-PIT, 888-666-3974.
